Have you got sunscreen?

posted by:

Did you know that exposure to sunlight for a long period of time actually promote more wrinkles to your skin? Besides wrinkles, we have high risk of getting skin cancer if this goes on without proper use of sun protection or sunscreen in our daily beauty regime. I choose to present this important information in the format of a table, for an easier read.

What is sun protection?

It is simply guarding a body from the adverse effects of sunlight. Aside from the hazards of heat, the sun poses the danger of sunburn, which can permanently damage the skin and cause skin cancer, precancerous changes in the skin, as well as premature wrinkling and signs of aging.

What is sunscreen?

Sunscreen is any substance or material that protects the skin from UV radiation. Sunscreens are available in the forms of topical lotion, cream, ointment, gel, or spray that can be applied to the skin; a salve or stick that can be applied to the lips, nose, and eyelids; a moistener in towelettes that can be rubbed against the skin; sunglasses that protect the eyes; certain types of sun-protection clothing; and film screen that can be affixed to the windows of a car, room, or office.

What is meant by SPF?

SPF, an abbreviation for sun-protection factor, is a number such as 15, 30, or 50 that indicates how long a topical sunscreen remains effective on the skin. A user can determine the duration of effectiveness simply by multiplying the SPF by the length of time it takes for him or her to suffer a burn without sunscreen.

What is the best sunscreen?

Overall, the safest and most effective sun-protection products are pure zinc and/or titanium-based sunblocks. These two ingredients have been around a long time and boast great safety data. The ideal sunscreen blocks both ultraviolet A and B (UVA and UVB) rays, is stable, doesn’t break down in the sun, and doesn’t get absorbed through the skin.

Is there any difference between sunscreen and sunblock?

Physical sunscreens like zinc oxide and titanium dioxide are sunblocks; they physically (like a brick wall) block both UVA and UVB rays. Besides these two, all other sunscreens are chemical-based sunscreens. Not all sunscreens effectively block UVA as well as UVB rays. The chemical sunscreens break down with sun exposure and may need more frequent application.

When should I use a sunscreen?

Dermatologists recommend that everyone use sunscreen of at least SPF 15 or greater every day, year-round. If you plan to be in the sun more than 20-30 minutes a day, you should wear sunscreen of at least SPF 30. Even on cloudy days, about 80% of the sun’s rays pass through the clouds. Nowadays, so many moisturizers, lotions, and makeups have sunscreen built in that it doesn’t make sense to use any products that don’t contain sunscreen. It just makes it so mush easier. I recommend, for example, if you wear any foundation, that there be at least an SPF 15 built in. If not, you may want to change brands.

What about sensitive skin? I break out with almost all kinds of creams. What can I use?

Sunblocks with pure zinc or titanium are the best choices for sensitive skin. (Remember that zinc oxide is actually safely used on a baby’s skin for diaper rashes.) Wash off the sunscreen as soon as you get home in the evening.

Are all sunscreens equally effective against UV radiation?

No. Some sunscreens protect against only one type of ultraviolet radiation: ultraviolet-B (UVB). Others protect against both types of ultraviolet radiation that reach earth’s atmosphere from the sun: ultraviolet-B and ultraviolet-A (UVA).

Sunscreens that protect against both UVA and UVB, and are thus classified as “broad spectrum,” are recommended for everyone

Should everyone use sunscreen protection?

As a general rule, babies 6 months of age or younger should not have sunscreen applied to their skin because their bodies may not be capable of tolerating the chemicals in sunscreens. Instead, they should be kept away from sun exposure.

Everyone over 6 months of age should use a sunscreen regularly unless they and their doctors decide it would be better to protect the skin in other ways.

Do all tanning products contain sunscreens?

No, some don’t. Tanning products that don’t contain sunscreen will be required by the FDA to carry a warning label alerting consumers to the dangers of unprotected sunbathing.

Is sunscreen protection necessary in the winter / cloudy day?

Yes, UV radiation, though not as intense in the winter / cloudy day, still poses a threat, especially when rays reflect off snow. There is no safe time of year when it comes to UV radiation.

What general skin care tips do you give your patients?

The sun is not your friend! Our main prevention measures are aimed at sun avoidance and sun protection. These include

1. using zinc sunscreens with at least SPF 30,

2. using wide-brimmed hats (6 inches),

3. using physical barriers when possible like sun-protective clothing and sunglasses – denim jacket / white t-shirt

4. avoiding the peak sun hours of 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., and

5.seeking shade and staying indoors.

Hand Therapy

It’s always a guess or two when you needed good hand lotion yet no one could give you precise solution. Most people tell you, just buy and try. Or when you walk into a shop, you try out the product, you feel that’s the best ever but soon after you purchase that, you realise it isn’t really the one you are looking for.

The place where I used to work, I had to stay in the office most of the time. The dryness in an air-conditioned room can really wrinkle your skin. I was given a tube to try, it’s from Crabtree & Evelyn; The Gardeners Hand Therapy. The wonders that work after applying it. Well you don’t have to wear a lot, just slap some and the moisturising effect from the cream; voila! To all who are seeking smooth and silky hands, try this…I swear by it!

Fish Spa or Fish Feeding?

fish spa

I would call it, A Fish Feeding Experience.

Ladies, if you are still wondering if you should go for this fish spa session, I would say GO!

Don’t worry about the ticklish sensation. In fact, it is quite therapeutic seeing my body and mind relaxed when they nibble away the dead skin on my feet. If you’re wondering if your feet will be smooth and silky after the session, well I hate to burst your bubble but to say, it is just 20% of a real feet polish and spa.

Please do not get me wrong! This fish spa is never a waste of time since the results are not as beautifully worded as the ones we read from other reviews or newspaper. This is just my personal view after spending 45 minutes in the pool of fishes. It’s definitely a fantastic experience despite some silly moments of squirming and giggling.

To obtain the best result, just remain still in the pool and relax. Try not to focus so much on the fishes, counting how many are on your feet. By doing so, you will be able to stay calm and not lifting up your feet whenever the fishes swim by. Oh! by the way, the fishes seemed to be more interested with my right foot than the left. I wonder why :)

No more saggy eyes after party!

I was so intrigued by this product. I wanted to have a first hand on it but I can’t coz I am scrimping like mad now. This is one of the geniuses’ product by MAC, it’s called Fast Response eye cream and the effect is like what it is named after – almost immediate. So after a whole night of partying, all we need is to slap some on our eyes. It absorbs quickly and repair the dryness in our eyes area. Cool it sounds :) Can’t wait to get one for myself :p

Vitamin C Micro Refiner _ Facial Exfoliator

posted by:

vitamin C micro refinerIt’s good to use, easy to apply, refreshed feeling it will leave you after just one wash. The tiny particles in the cream exfoliates and removes dead cells on our skin, almost immediately. The wash is definitely gentle to skin, not coarse. The wash is complemented with its toning effect as it doesn’t leave the skin dry after the wash. It’s a good investment, something you will not regret buying.

Olive Body Butter

Olive Body Butter

Nothing can beat this when it comes to body butter. Slap some on both hands, legs and body to feel its immediate work in moisturizing the dry, thirsty skin. In fact, olive proves its high standing in preserving and restoring youthfulness and beauty with its richness in Vitamin E and antioxidant. The layer of moisturizer stays comfortably on the skin without leaving the waxy or oily texture when we touch our hands. Its fragrance is definitely not pungent with ripe olive but oozing the creamy, soft olive fragrance.

If you’re looking for body lotion, think no further but to walk into any The Bodyshop counter for one of this.

Volume: 200ml

Application: Anytime, best after shower and before sleep. Just apply direct onto the skin and massage it.

Encounters of the Facial Kind

posted by:

You’d think at my age I’d take better care of my skin. No, I’m not gonna tell you how old I am but let’s say I’m nearing an age where I don’t wanna tell people my age.

Which is now.

But anyways, as I was saying, you’d think I’d take better care of my skin, which means I don’t. I’m very lazy. I’m not blessed with perfect skin but I’ve never had any real problems with it so therein lies my excuse. Besides, I’m very lazy.

So I finally made an appointment to go for my first facial in 3 years. 3 years I repeat, cos lying down for an hour or so is too much hard work and have I mentioned that I’m lazy? And I finally went last Saturday for the appointment. Gawd, I dunno why I didn’t do it before. It was fab! Ok la, it wasn’t as fab as miraculously losing 4 lbs when you step on the scales in the morning but it came a good 4th or 5th in my fab scenarios.

As you babes know, they make you strip down to your undies and you hafta wear a long bedsheet elasticised like a tube only 100 times uglier.

Which leads me to the question of why? Why are robes in facial salons so hideously blah? Can’t they make them out of some super groovy material? I don’t mind the way it’s cut cos that’s the most convienient to slip on & off but come on facial-salon-robe-supplier-people, get with the program and get me some Pucci like prints or something! Hmmmm, maybe I’ll make my own robe thingy and bring it with me next time.

After the beautician aka Toturer With Loving Hands has lead me to the room, asked me to lie down on the bed and tucked me in with a blanket, she then proceeds to cleanse my grotty face. First with just plain milk cleanser, then with milk cleanser mixed with a scrub cos those dead cells need to be taught a lesson. At first I’m quite chatty cos I just had a latte downstairs and am so not sleepy. Besides, I know what’s coming up next so no point sleeping so early on in the facial.

“How long have you been working here” – I really didn’t care.

“Is my skin ok?” – Cared somewhat.

“Is my skin dry?” – Cared more.

“Do I have any fine lines?” – Cared alot.

2 Yrs, Yes, Yes and Not Yet.

Answers weren’t that short la but I’ll spare you the details. Then came the steaming. Yes the steaming.

Good gawd, I hate the steaming. I have a sinus problem so the steaming stuffs up my nose something chronic.

“You ok? Not too hot?”

“Ja, I’b dokay”

Cos I’m determined that every bit of my 3 yrs of crap that’s been building up in the pores of my face comes out later. 10 minutes, 10 minutes of hot steam stuffing up my nostrils and me turning my head from side to side gasping for air! Plus it was hot in that damn blanket.

FINALLY, TWLH comes back in.

Yeeehaaa, extraction time! No, I’m not some sort of sadist but to me this is the part that counts most in the whole facial process. No pain, no gain, mantra crap. She starts with my nose.

“Tahan abit ya? Long time no facial, got alot to take out wor.”

Damn sakit I tell you!

Eyes start tearing all.

Jaws start clenching all.

She moves on to my cheeks, next my forehead. Then she spots two oil seeds under my eyes.

“This one going to hurt more abit ah.”

She pokes it with something freaking sharp and squeezes crap out. More tears start falling down my cheeks. Padan muka. Who ask you not to go to facial for so long.

“Ok habis oredi.”

Tears start falling down my cheeks. Tears of joy.

TWLH wipes my face with some sort of toner and then uses some sort of machine with some sort of attachment, runs it over my face, to have some sort of effect.

Don’t quite like that machine.

She then rubs my face with aromatherapy oil which smells divine and lulls me to sleep with a massage on my face, neck, shoulders and back. Mmmmmm, finally I can relax. She stops to mix up something up, then slathers on this cold goo on my face which felt lovely. After slapping on the first layer of the mask with a brush, she puts on what feels like a netting gauze of sorts on my face and then slaps on a second layer of the cooling mask on the netting. It felt really nice and I was slowly drifting off to sleep.

Then TWLH spoilt it all by cleaning her bowl and whatever it is at the sink behind.

Pft.

I really don’t need to hear banging of bowls and utensils. Ok la, it was exactly clanging and all that noisy but still it irritated me. And if that wasn’t all, the damn pipes was making annoying gurgling sounds. Hurry up la, finish cleaning already, I wanna doze off!

Finally, peace & quiet …. snore snore snore.

“Miss, Miss ah, I’m going to clean you face now ok.”

She cleans off the wonderfully-cooling-sleep-inducing mask and then uses this machine that sprays what I hope isn’t just plain water on to my face. I don’t know why a machine is needed. Can’t she just put the whatever-water-it-is into a spray bottle and spray on my face? Maybe that’s why these damn facials cost so much. Use unnecessary machines all.

BUT, this last machine she uses is my favourite, it’s some really cold metal thing that she uses to glide all over my face. Best gila! It’s like putting a spoon in the fridge then gliding that all over the face. Only difference is that chunks of skin doesn’t come off the face la. Ewww, that’d be nasty. After which, TWLH massages in moisturiser and taaaa-daaaaaaa facial is over!

Won’t bore you with the consultation afterwards. Needless to say though, I was well pleased with my 70 mins of pampering. My skin looked helluva lot clearer. Liked it so much that I’m going back in 3 weeks time for another facial and to sign up a whole package.

We Malaysians do love our packages don’t we? Got package ah? Cheaper to buy package what. Don’t have package ah? Wah, you all should make package la, then more people come.

I’m probably not gonna write another blog on facials. This one was the one off cos so excited mah, 1st facial in 3 years all. BUT, if they come out with some new fandangled machine that totally rocks, then expect another long-winded encouter with TWLH!

’til next time, slater Babes.

Peace & Long Life
